sitting in the bit of garden with sun. walking on the side of the road with the rays. rehearsals going well but they’re air conditioned so when you come outside you want to stay there. the short film production is coming on aswell. we normally have total freedom to mess up or just sit and play computer games instead of face reality. frequently whole video shoots have been delayed by days due to a slight feeling of melancholy or a good book. you can’t do that with 10 cast and crew and mysterious people in offices who you never meet. feel like i should be eating salad to prepare for my performance. maybe i’ll drink guinness and avoid the calamari
check out john. he owns the fur shop. still going strong. i really want to be vegetarian. i just can’t do it but i know that animals experience terrible things before they provide us with nandos. if i was a vegetarian i would source a load of really happy foxes that died of natural causes and skin them to make a coat
i love the photographs of norman parkinson but i never knew his was a stage name. who would come up with norman as a stage name? only a true genius english eccentric would do that. but thinking on all the great stage names, if reggie had remained dwight instead of elton john i don’t think he would be any less cool. and how much more cool would freddie mercury have been if he’d only stayed with farrokh bulsara? i’m glad i chose to be called mike skinner instead of emmanuel buntingthrape-hokkell. my stories of english woe wouldn’t have been the same if you knew i desended from austrian royalty
yesterday felt like 4 complete days in one. due to great contrast in location and persons. i made a beat, we rehearsed, we did 20 radio interviews and then had a long, short film production meeting…. pickup artists, professional bedders of women say that if you take a girl to many different locations on your first date, it simulates the effect of many dates and she feels like she knows you better. apparently it helps speed the relationship along a bit. i felt like i’d been on many dates yesterday as i stood at the platform with my belly full of guinness. i was so tired i would have gone to bed with anyone if they’d had one to hand. today i’m looking forward to getting back to my ordinary 2 day day
many mornings down pon sofa at 5:30am lately. an extra 2 hours in the morning is like 4 at 4pm. it’s all obvious stuff. more right hemisphere brain energy for employment laterally on non straight forward problems. but also the key element for me, the unique quality of the bird tweeting noise floor. constant repetitive sound that doesn’t change. some people use crickets as intruder alarms. crickets cricket about all night but then if they see something they stop cricketing. and the stopping of a sound can alert us just as much as the starting of a new one. try it. ditch your expensive infrared banham solution and put some crickets at your door. let me know how you get on
‘left at the lights’ is track 7 on the new D.O.T album. it features a heavy clanging antonym in the chorus just like i like. “you sent me left at the lights, but left was so right…”. context is everything in music. it’s what makes this chorus good because on its own the lyric is almost identical to an album title by bon jovi, “this left feels right”. the thing that makes our lyric really good and the album title by bon jovi not, is that bon jovi has horrible soft rock hair and too much money. whereas our almost identical lyric is surrounded by a good song and sung by a guy who can really play football. context is everything.
‘blood sweat and tears’. i was going to try to draw on some sweat but it would have looked pony. the first line of the song goes, “i went down, to disorder’s edge, to see what’s going on, in my head”. a typical D.O.T lyric, almost classic soul/rock but with an angle on mental health slotted in there because that’s what we like to talk about
